CDR David Coles
Commander David Coles grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. After graduating from St. Mary’s College of California with a bachelor of arts degree, he attended Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida and was commissioned an Ensign in October 2000. Coles holds graduate degrees from the University of San Francisco and the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies.
As a division officer, Coles served on board USS Lake Champlain (CG 57) as the Strike Officer, and USS Chung-Hoon (DDG 93) as the commissioning Navigator. Between his first and second division officer tours he served as the J-3 Fires Officer and Battle Watch Captain at the Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa, Djibouti. As a department head, Coles was the Operations Officer on board USS Carney (DDG 64). Following his department tour, he commanded PC Crew Bravo, serving on board USS Monsoon (PC 4), USS Chinook (PC 9), and USS Thunderbolt (PC 12).
Ashore, Coles served as an action officer on the planning staff of Commander U.S. Coast Guard Pacific Area, as the Defense Legislative Fellow in the personal office of the Chairman of the House Armed Services Subcommittee for Seapower and Projection Forces, and as the Flag Aide to the Chief of Naval Operations.
His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (three awards), Navy Achievement Medal and Coast Guard Achievement Medal.
